Gluskα̨Be´ Creates Himself And Competes With The Creator
From here begins the story of Gluskabe. After “the Owner” made the first man, there was a little earth left over. From that leftover earth Gluskabe formed himself, from ground that had been sprinkled, and that, they said, was why he was so strong.
When the Owner saw him, he was astonished. “How did you come to be here?” he asked. Gluskabe replied, “I formed myself from the earth left over from the first man you made.” The Owner said, “You are wonderful.” And Gluskabe answered, “I am wonderful because you sprinkled me.”
So they set off together, climbed a mountain, and looked out over the world. They could see lakes and rivers, trees, and the whole shape of the land. The Owner said, “Look how wonderful my work is. I made all this by the wish of my mind, the world as it stands, the ocean, the rivers, and the lakes.” Then he asked Gluskabe, “What can you make?”
Gluskabe said, “Can I not make something too?” Then he added, “Perhaps I can make the wind.” The Owner replied, “Go on then, make what you can, according to your power.”
So Gluskabe made the wind, and the wind rose. It blew harder and harder, until it tore trees up by the roots and threw them down. Then the Owner said to Gluskabe, “Enough. I have seen how strong you are, and what you can do.”
“And now,” said the Owner, “I will make the wind in return.” The wind rose again, and it blew so fiercely that Gluskabe’s hair became tangled all over his head. He tried to smooth it down, but the wind snatched it away. The wind took all his hair, and left him bare.
And that is the end of my story.
